Universal Design in Education

Check out this video by some students at HOPE school…re-wrote the lyrics to ‘Single Ladies’ to be ‘Scholar Ladies’.  Hilarious!  Thoughts on where the idea for the video originated?  Students?  teachers?  Obviously there was some staff support at least!

Can you spot a fake smile?

The above link goes to a trial on the BBC website.  you can watch 20 smiles, and you rate whether you think they are real or fake.  At the end you are told whether you are right or wrong on each of them.  They are categorized based on some technology in facial feature recognition.  I don’t know much about the development of these tools, but I think it is interesting that they can ‘determine’ whether a smile is genuine or fake.  Does this mean the software knows more than the smiler?  So, could someone be smiling, think it is genuine, but really be classified as fake?  If so, is this an error in the software, or does it speak to subconsious emotions?  Just some wonderings on my part.  I did rather poorly on the quiz…I think I got 13 out of 20.  hope you can do better!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Karen and I’m a 5th year doctoral student.  My research is on the use of technology in higher education, so in some ways, this class is kind of meta for me.  I love the idea of UDL and am actively promoting ways that higher education classes can be improved through the technological tools we now have available.  If I were not at HGSE, I would probably be a chef, or perhaps design costumes.  I love baking and sewing!  I am also an identical twin, though it is unlikely that you’ll see my sister running around HGSE, as she lives in Oregon.  I am looking forward to getting to know those of you in T560 this semester!

This is a cute video playing on the English language and our need for affirmation.  Notice how the main character’s affect is portrayed and how it changes throughout the movie, and the effect his affect has on those around him.
